Choosing the Right Skincare Products for Your Face

Choosing the right skincare products for your face is important to see an effect. But it's also crucial to think about what ingredients are in your skincare products and what you mix them with. Not all ingredients can be combined. If you combine the wrong skincare ingredients, you might end up getting zero effect from your products or, even worse, experiencing a reaction in the form of swelling and breakouts.

Vitamin C and AHA & BHA Acids

Vitamin C? Super for the skin. AHA and BHA? Awesome. Together? Not so great! Why is this such a bad combo? Well, they are all acids, and combining them can be a bit too much for your skin to handle. This is especially true if you have rather dry skin. But what should you do if you own products with these different acids and want to get the benefits of them all? The answer is simple – use them at different times of the day. As long as you don't use them at the exact same time, there shouldn't be a problem.

Benzoyl Peroxide and Retinol

Both benzoyl peroxide and Retinol can be used to combat acne. But if you use them together, they start fighting each other instead! If you use the ingredients at the same time, the benzoyl peroxide will cause the Retinol to oxidize, making it less effective. You can still use products containing these substances, but we highly advise using them on different days so they can be as effective as possible.

Benzoyl Peroxide and Chemical Peels

For those familiar with these different products, it is quite obvious that this is not a particularly good combination. Benzoyl peroxide dries out the skin and essentially removes the very outermost layer of the skin. Adding a chemical peel to the mix will both irritate the skin and damage it.

Retinol and Exfoliants

Retinol thoroughly exfoliates your skin to speed up cell renewal. And if you use an exfoliant as well, it simply becomes too much of a good thing. You don't need both and will likely turn red as a tomato. The worst part is that the redness can last for several days. At the same time, it's worth mentioning that you can use an exfoliant on the same day you use Retinol, as long as you don't do it at the same time. You can use Retinol at night (since it makes you extra sensitive to the sun) and use an exfoliant in the morning. Just don't forget to use SPF afterwards!

Salicylic Acid and Glycolic Acid

As we learned earlier, unnecessarily combining acids is not a good move (an exception applies to Hyaluronic Acid, since it is not really an acid). If you mix Salicylic Acid and Glycolic Acid, your skin will become unnecessarily dry. Make sure to use them separately or on different days. Tip! Water-Based and Oil-Based Skincare

Using both water-based and oil-based products at the same time is not really a problem, as long as you use them in the right order. Water-based products should be applied before oil-based ones. If done in the wrong order, the water-based products won't penetrate the skin as well and thus won't do as much good.

Niacinamide and Vitamin C

Both of these ingredients are very effective at treating skin with scars or getting rid of blemishes. Previous findings suggested that combining these two ingredients could result in a minor disaster. Lately, however, it has been stated that the ingredients Niacinamide and Vitamin C don't actually
