Purging and the Skin's Detox

Testing new skincare products is fun, but it can sometimes lead to unwanted reactions like breakouts or dryness. This doesn't necessarily mean the product is bad; it can simply be part of a purging process. We'll help you make the transition safely.

Understanding the Purging Process

When you introduce new skincare, a detox process begins where the skin clears out old residue. This can lead to reactions like pimples, dryness, or redness. This is completely normal and can last for a few weeks. The golden rule is to be extra careful if you have sensitive skin. Use the products for at least two months to be able to fully evaluate the result. However, if you experience pain or severe itching, you should stop using the product immediately.

Introduce Products Slowly

Skincare is highly individual and is affected by stress, skin type, lifestyle, and diet. It's important not to rush when testing something new. Less is more when it comes to getting the skin accustomed.

Follow a Customized Gradual Plan

Our skin therapist Matilda recommends the following setup for a smooth transition:

  • Week 1: Apply the product morning or evening, every second or third day.
  • Week 2: Continue every other day. If the skin feels good, you can increase to every day towards the end of the week.
  • Week 3: By now, the skin has likely adapted, and you can use the product daily, either morning or evening or both depending on the product.

Handling Active Ingredients Like Retinol and Acids

Retinol is an effective ingredient that requires caution. Start by using it every third day and increase gradually. If the skin becomes dry or tight, slow the pace to let the skin recover.

Acids should also be introduced carefully. Feel free to try a small amount on your wrist or behind your ear first. When you start using them on your face, stick to half the active time in the beginning and increase gradually after 1–2 weeks. Never mix several different acids at the same time.

It usually takes 2–8 weeks for the skin to get used to a new product. Do you need personalized advice? Consult our skin therapist Matilda for help with your routine.
