Retinal vs retinol – why retinal wins every time

Both retinol and retinal are forms of vitamin A, but the skin can only use them once they have been converted into retinoic acid. Retinol must be converted in two steps: first to retinal, then to retinoic acid. Retinal is already one step closer to the active form and therefore converts significantly faster – up to 11 times faster than classic retinol – providing an effect comparable to prescription retinoic acid but with a significantly lower risk of redness and flaking.

Retinal is not only faster. It is also the strongest non-prescription retinoid on the market and up to 3 times more biologically active than retinol. Furthermore, retinal is the only retinoid with direct antibacterial properties, making it perfect also for those who want to prevent impurities while working on lines and uneven skin tone.

In this cream, the retinal is also stabilized and encapsulated to protect the molecule's potency – retinal is notoriously difficult to stabilize and therefore rare in products that truly deliver results. The gradual release during the night provides maximum effect with minimal irritation.

The skin repairs itself the most at night, and that is when vitamin A is most beneficial. The cream is therefore formulated as a nourishing night cream: emollient oils and glycerin keep the skin hydrated while the retinal stimulates cell renewal and collagen production. Retinal (retinaldehyd) är en form av vitamin A som ligger ett steg närmare retinsyra – den aktiva formen huden faktiskt använder. Do I need to phase Retinal 0.1% Night Cream into my routine?

Yes. Start with 2–3 evenings a week for the first two weeks to let your skin adjust. Slight dryness or warmth the first few times is normal and usually subsides. Then gradually increase to every evening.

Can I use the cream every evening?

Yes – that's the goal. Retinal is formulated for minimal irritation, but the skin still needs an adjustment period. Once your skin tolerates 2–3 evenings a week without issues, you can move up to every evening.

Can I use the cream if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. Retinal is a vitamin A derivative and we do not recommend the product during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Consult your doctor if you are unsure.

What is the difference between retinol and retinal?

Both are forms of vitamin A that the skin converts into retinoic acid to take effect. Retinol needs two conversion steps, retinal only one – which is why retinal works faster and delivers results closer to prescription retinoic acid, but with a lower risk of irritation.

Why is the cream yellow?

The pale yellow colour comes from the retinal itself – retinaldehyde is naturally yellow. The colour shows the active ingredient is intact, and it does not stain the skin or bed linen.

Do I need a moisturiser afterwards, and can I use it around the eyes?

The cream is a nourishing night cream and is usually enough as the last step. If your skin is very dry, you can layer a simple moisturiser on top. Avoid the eye area itself – apply up to the cheekbone and brow bone.
