What is acne, and what does "backne" mean?
Acne is an accumulation of sebum and dead skin cells that clog pores and result in blackheads. It appears primarily in places where our sebaceous glands are largest, such as the face, back, and chest. If a sebaceous gland becomes inflamed, a pimple forms.
There are four different types of breakouts or blemishes:
- Blackheads: Open pores filled with sebum and dead skin cells.
- Milia: Small white cysts under the skin.
- Cysts: Deep, inflamed pimples that can be painful.
- Papules: Small, red bumps on the skin.
The first step in the right direction is to identify what type of acne you have. If you are unsure, you can contact an authorized skin therapist or dermatologist.
Why do you get pimples on your back?
The skin is the body's largest organ, and the size of the sebaceous glands varies. The sebaceous glands are largest on the chest, back, and face. Acne occurs when there is an overproduction of sebum that clogs the pores.
Bacteria buildup from the gym
When working out, it's common to share benches and equipment. Avoid direct skin contact with equipment to reduce the risk of inflammation. Use your own towel and be thorough with cleansing. Even friction from a backpack and sweat can aggravate your acne.
Shampoo and conditioner residue
Residue from hair products that are not rinsed out properly can clog the pores on your back. Be extra careful with rinsing if you have long hair.
How do you get rid of pimples on your back?
Use a mild cleanser that targets impurities. Salicylic Acid is an effective ingredient for blemish-prone skin. It is also important to use a hydrating and oil-free body lotion. Results from skincare are individual, but expect to see visible improvements after about four weeks.
