The Basics of Active Skincare

When it comes to skincare, there is a plethora of active ingredients that can all work wonders, but also cause problems if used incorrectly. Vitamins and acids are strong substances, and what we are actually doing is playing chemist on our faces. It can feel confusing at first, but here is a simple guide on which ingredients you can advantageously combine to get the most out of your skincare.

Active Ingredients in Skincare

Acids for Exfoliation

Using acids in your skincare might sound scary at first, but they help clear pores and leave your skin smoother than ever. We usually talk about three types: AHA, BHA, and PHA.

Difference Between AHA and BHA

AHA Acid: Water-soluble and works on the surface of the skin. Perfect for evening out skin tone and providing hydration.

BHA Acid: Oil-soluble and penetrates into the pores, making it ideal for oily skin and acne.

PHA Acid: An even milder alternative that works for sensitive skin and rosacea.

AHA Acid

AHA stands for “Alpha Hydroxy Acids”. Glycolic Acid is the most effective of the AHA acids thanks to its small molecules that penetrate deep down into the skin to improve texture and reduce visible lines. Lactic Acid is a milder alternative that is balanced and antibacterial.

BHA Acid

BHA, or Salicylic Acid, penetrates deep down into the pores and dissolves oil. It has an anti-inflammatory effect, making it excellent for acne-prone skin. BHA and AHA can advantageously be combined in the routine for a complete cleanse.

PHA Acid

PHA acid is a kinder variant of AHA acids. Thanks to its larger molecules, it works more slowly and is therefore an excellent alternative for sensitive skin.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants help the body deal with free radicals and reduce oxidative stress. They can counteract pigmentation spots and premature aging.

  • Vitamin C: Anti-inflammatory and great for pigmentation changes.
  • Vitamin E: Preserves moisture and protects against sun damage.
  • Pomegranate: Strengthens the skin barrier.

Retinol

Retinol is a powerful form of Vitamin A that penetrates deep down into the skin. It is effective against acne, sun damage, and wrinkles. Tretinoin is the strongest variant (prescription only), while Retinyl Palmitate is a milder form often found in standard skincare.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a versatile ingredient that balances sebum production, reduces pores, and strengthens the skin barrier. It works excellently together with BHA acid or Hyaluronic Acid. For best results, try Brilliant Niacinamide + Zinc.

Great Combinations of Active Ingredients

Here are the best combinations for your skin:

  1. Vitamin C + Vitamin E: The Vitamin C becomes more potent together with other antioxidants.
  2. BHA + Niacinamide: BHA clears the pores and Niacinamide tightens them for smoother skin.
  3. UV Protection + Vitamin C: Provides complete protection against free radicals throughout the day.
  4. Hyaluronic Acid + Retinol: The Hyaluronic Acid hydrates and soothes the skin during Retinol treatment.
  5. AHA + BHA: The oil-soluble BHA acid opens up for the AHA acid, delivering a deep exfoliation.
